The Health Department conducts unannounced inspections of restaurants at least once a year. Inspectors check that restaurants comply with food safety rules. A letter grade of 'B' indicates 14 to 27 recorded violations at the restaurant. The majority of NYC restaurants currently fall into this category. Starting in July 2010, New York City has required restaurants to post letter grades that correspond to scores received from sanitary inspections.
